Millions of Americans celebrated the nation's 250th Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, 2026, with nationwide parades, historic time capsule burials, and widespread commercial closures.

The federal holiday marking America's semiquincentennial paused government, postal, and banking operations, though major retail chains like Walmart and Target remained open.

Major Events in New York and Washington

New York City hosted the International Parade of Sail in New York Harbor, featuring 48 tall ships from 20 nations.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill delivered remarks along the Hudson River.

"Today marks 250 years of our nation and 250 years of millions of people across the world looking upon the greatness that is America," Mamdani said.

The maritime parade included an aerial review with over 100 military aircraft led by the Blue Angels squadron.

"This is America at its best," Sherrill said. "This is who we are as a people.

This is what we can deliver when we fight alongside friends and allies for those things we believe in."

In Washington, President Donald Trump anchored the "Salute to America 250" event on the National Mall, following a patriotic address at Mount Rushmore on Friday.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore delivered an Independence Day address from Annapolis, offering an alternative perspective to the administration's festivities.
