Norway head coach Stale Solbakken has clarified his recent remarks about Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti, insisting they were intended as a compliment.

Speaking on July 5, 2026, ahead of the World Cup Round of 16 match, Solbakken said his comment after Norway's win over Ivory Coast was praise for one of Europe's greatest coaches.

“It was just meant as a compliment for him, because he is one of the greatest coaches in European football,” Solbakken said.

He added that facing Ancelotti's Brazil is a huge honor but stressed the need to win to stay in the tournament.

Historical Record and Tactical Plans

Norway has never lost to Brazil in four previous meetings, including a famous 1998 World Cup victory. However, Solbakken downplayed that history.

“That win meant a lot for Norwegian football, but we must not forget that Brazil was already qualified and had nothing to play for.

This is a knockout match. Now both teams must win,” he said.

Solbakken outlined defensive plans to contain Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior, calling him a “dancer with the ball” and a physical phenomenon.

“Our backs and wingbacks must never let him get into one-on-one situations,” Solbakken explained.

Meanwhile, Brazil's camp has focused heavily on neutralizing Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.

“Everyone knows Haaland. I don't need to explain to my defenders how he plays.

They know him even better than I do,” Ancelotti said.

Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães emphasized cutting off passing lanes to Haaland.

“We must try to prevent the ball from reaching him. We know he can decide a match with one ball,” Guimarães said.

Solbakken acknowledged that Brazil remains favorite but believes Norway can win if they perform at 100 percent.
