The presenter maintained that exiting while performing at the top of her career was the correct decision in hindsight.

"And I didn't want to be diminished. I'd rather go out doing the top job.

So maybe it came a couple of years before I was ready to do it. But in hindsight, it was absolutely the right time."

During a 2023 interview on Woman's Hour, Barker reiterated her desire to conclude her tenure at the All England Club on her own terms.

"I wanted to do Wimbledon on my own terms.

BBC Sport offered me a new contract, but I knew with age and time and with everything that's happening around that over the next few years I would get phased out slightly."

said Sue Barker, Former BBC Presenter.

Her final broadcast featured numerous tributes from long-term colleagues, including high-profile commentary figures.

“She’s giving up the baton but I’m not sure anybody can pick it up,” said Martina Navratilova, Tennis Legend.

Former player and commentator John McEnroe also praised her long-standing connection to the grand slam tournament during the retirement tribute.

“You see the thing about our Sue, she just is Wimbledon,” said John McEnroe, Tennis Commentator.

Barker recently addressed the departure of longtime commentator Andrew Castle, whose exit coincided with changes to the broadcasting format by the BBC.

"In the early 1990s, when I was starting at Sky TV, Andrew was my pundit. The tennis was in a Portakabin in the car park."
