Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has decided to leave forward Neymar on the bench for the World Cup Round of 16 match against Norway on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
The 34-year-old Santos forward recently recovered from a right calf injury but only played 14 minutes in the group stage against Scotland.

Ancelotti instead chose a starting attack of Gabriel Martinelli, Rayan, Vinicius Junior, and Matheus Cunha.
The decision also came after midfielder Lucas Paqueta was ruled out due to a muscle tear in his left thigh.
Ancelotti's Tactical Explanation
Ancelotti discussed his frontline options during tournament preparation, noting that Vinicius Junior and Neymar can play together.
He explained that Vinicius has changed positions at Real Madrid and can cause problems for opponents from both the wing and center.
Regarding the previous knockout match against Japan, Ancelotti said he kept Neymar on the bench because he was waiting for extra time.
“I spoke with him: if we didn't equalize, he would come on in the 60th or 65th minute.
We equalized and I didn't want to change the team structure, as we had control of the game,” Ancelotti said.
Haaland Threat and Neymar's Readiness
Ancelotti acknowledged the threat of Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, saying his defenders know him well from facing him many times.
“We are focused on preparing well for the match, taking into account Haaland's characteristics, as he is a very, very dangerous striker,” Ancelotti said.
