China conducted a long-range missile test in the Pacific Ocean on Monday, a move that the Australian government labeled as destabilizing to regional stability.

The missile, carrying a dummy warhead, landed within designated waters during what Beijing described as routine military training, according to The Guardian.

Australia's acting prime minister, Richard Marles, said the government was informed by China of its intention to conduct the test and subsequently expressed formal opposition.

"This is a long-range missile test, and we are very concerned about any actions which undermine the stability, the peace, and security of the Pacific," Marles stated.

State media later confirmed the successful launch, which involved a strategic nuclear submarine.

Xinhua reported that the test was part of an annual training schedule, with notifications provided to relevant nations.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the lack of transparency surrounding China's military expansion, noting that such activities are inconsistent with regional expectations for peace.

"Australia has been clear with China that we regard this as destabilising to the region," Wong said, adding that the test undermines the Pacific Islands Forum's vision of an "Ocean of Peace."

Independent tracking data indicated that three Chinese satellite-tracking vessels were positioned in the Pacific to monitor the event.

Analyst Mark Douglas of Starboard Maritime Intelligence stated that the presence of these ships suggests the test was planned well in advance.

Douglas also noted the strategic timing of the announcement, which came a day after Australia and Fiji signed the Ocean of Peace Alliance.
