An MG executive was forced to end a livestream after viewers repeatedly accused the company's new sedan of copying rival designs.

Chen Cui, who heads MG's brand operations, hosted the June 29 broadcast to explain the styling of the new MG07 fastback sedan.

Instead, viewers compared it to both the Porsche Taycan and Xiaomi SU7.

According to Chinese media, Chen insisted the MG07 “does not plagiarize a single detail,” but became emotional and ended the session early.

At a subsequent media briefing, Chen tried to reframe the debate.

He argued that if the MG07 copied anything, it copied MG itself, citing design cues from classic models like the 1965 MGB GT fastback.

The company says the MG07 is a modern interpretation of styling that has been part of the brand for decades.

However, the similarities are hard to ignore.

The MG07's headlights bear a strong resemblance to Porsche's, some wheel designs feel familiar, and the side profile inevitably brings the Xiaomi SU7 to mind.

MG insists the design is driven by aerodynamics.

Maximizing efficiency means reducing drag, pushing designers toward low noses, smooth body sides, flush door handles, sweeping rooflines, and tapered fastback tails.

When everyone chases the same aerodynamic targets, there is limited freedom for differentiation.

This incident highlights a growing design debate in the EV era. Physics is nudging every manufacturer toward similar silhouettes.

The real challenge is giving a slippery car enough personality that it is not mistaken for someone else's.
