An intestinal parasite outbreak is spreading across southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio, and Florida, with health officials reporting hundreds of infections linked to contaminated fresh produce as of July 2026.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that statewide cases surged to 572 by July 4, a 29 percent increase in southeast Michigan within four days from June 30.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the official national outbreak season began on May 1, with over 140 cases tracked nationwide by mid-June.
Heavy volumes were also reported in New York, Texas, and Illinois.
The CDC stated that actual infection numbers likely exceed official tallies due to undocumented recoveries.
"The true number of people sick with cyclosporiasis was likely higher than the number reported," the agency's website reads.
Mild or unconfirmed cases frequently skew official tracking data.
Lucas County Epidemiologist Teresa DeTano urged the public to thoroughly clean hands and food items.

She dispelled assumptions about heat sterilization for fresh vegetables, noting that the parasite does not appear to be heat resistant.
Monroe County official Lindsay Patrick confirmed that local investigators are interviewing patients about recent grocery purchases and dining histories to identify the contamination origin.
"We ask individuals about where they purchased their groceries, where they might have ate in two weeks prior to sickness, but we are working towards investigation," Patrick said.
Local health agencies are collaborating with state laboratories to analyze biological samples and map transmission vectors.
"There's some additional testing that's done from the state, so that takes some time to get back just to link some things together and try to determine the source," Patrick added.
The Florida Department of Health documented 36 specific cases across various counties as of June 27.

Cases include Lee (6), Broward (5), Miami-Dade (3), Orange (3), Hillsborough (2), Polk (2), St. Johns (2), and others with single cases.
