Eurovision runner-up Sam Ryder made his West End debut as Jesus in a revamped production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium on July 7, 2026.

The production, directed by Timothy Sheader, reunited the creative team behind the Olivier Award-winning 2016 Regent's Park Open Air Theatre revival, including designer Tom Scutt and choreographer Drew McOnie.

Ryder starred alongside Tyrone Huntley, who reprised his Olivier-nominated role as Judas.

The staging featured a giant metal scaffold set design and a live band under musical director Tom Deering.

The central conflict focused heavily on the relationship between Jesus and Judas, exploring the political pressures of the era and the internal friction over Jesus's rise to fame.

Ryder received standing ovations for his vocal performance during the key musical number Gethsemane, showcasing his signature falsetto and popstar presence.

The production also featured Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene, David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate, and American actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson as King Herod.

Ferguson is the first of several rotating guest stars scheduled to play Herod during the London run.

Boy George, Layton Williams, Julian Clary, and Richard Armitage are set to take over the role in later performances.

The Guardian characterized the sound design as having "Greek levels of melodrama," noting that the show maintained a high, fever-pitched volume throughout.

The show utilized hand-held microphones and symbolic visual elements, such as throwing silver paint and golden glitter, to represent the betrayal and ultimate crucifixion of Christ.

The musical will transfer to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the autumn before embarking on a wider tour, as reported by WhatsOnStage.
