A performance clause in Max Verstappen's contract has been triggered following his retirement at the British Grand Prix, potentially allowing him to leave Red Bull Racing at season's end.

The crash at Silverstone on July 8, 2026, officially prevents Verstappen from securing a top-two championship spot before the summer break, enabling the exit option amid growing friction with team management.

Technical problems have compounded the team's difficulties, with repeated rear wing failures affecting Verstappen's races in Austria and Great Britain.

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher analyzed the issue on Sky DE, emphasizing the need for the team to resolve the recurring aerodynamic flaw.

Schumacher also noted that F2 driver Isack Hadjar performed well in qualifying compared to Verstappen, though the Dutch driver recovered better during the race despite mechanical issues.

Internal Divisions Over Setup and Strategy

Beyond mechanical issues, deep disagreements over vehicle setup and strategy have emerged between Verstappen and team principal Laurent Mekies.

Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher stated that internal frustrations escalated because Verstappen did not publicly renounce his exit option while at the Red Bull Ring.

Schumacher added that while media reports focused on battery and engine issues, internal disputes regarding engineering control remain the primary source of frustration.

Verstappen reportedly has different ideas about how and when certain systems should be used, as well as car setup preferences, while the team insists on following its prescribed methods.

The ongoing strain suggests a significant shift in the driver's long-term commitment, as communication between both sides appears to have deteriorated completely.
