The Wijk aan Zee village council has called on the Dutch government to immediately suspend sustainability subsidy negotiations with Tata Steel.
The demand follows the announcement that the steel manufacturer will face criminal prosecution for intentional pollution.

Linda Valent of the Dorpsraad Wijk aan Zee community foundation welcomed the Public Prosecution Service's decision to prosecute Tata Steel for its hazardous emissions in IJmuiden.
The cabinet had previously signaled a willingness to grant up to 2 billion euros in green subsidies to the company.
This occurred despite a multi-year environmental probe originating from a 2021 mass complaint supported by the council.
Valent questioned the propriety of finalizing financial commitments with an entity entering a criminal trial.
Council Questions Subsidy Timing
"It cannot be that you make agreements with a party that is in such a procedure," said Linda Valent, representative of the Dorpsraad Wijk aan Zee.

She emphasized that public funding should not be allocated to the company under the current circumstances.
Valent argued that regional environmental safety must be guaranteed before any financial transactions occur. "You are not just going to put money into that now?
The health of the IJmond area must first be secured," she said.
The first court hearing for the criminal case is scheduled for November.

The council insists that subsidy talks should remain frozen until the legal process concludes and environmental safety is assured.
