"Bagged lettuce, basil, raspberries — bagged lettuce is a big one because you don't cook it; it already comes washed," said Sims.

Medical professionals advise individuals to monitor their health closely and watch for severe symptoms that require immediate clinical attention.

"If you have diarrhea that lasts for more than a day or so, or you're getting dehydrated and can't keep up with food, that's the time to see a doctor," said Sims.

Dr. Claudia Richardson, medical director for Detroit's Health Department, urged the public to implement strict safety measures when preparing food items.

"I would rinse it thoroughly, immerse in water, vinegar," said Richardson.

The infection does not spread directly between individuals, which provides some reassurance to the public amid the rising numbers.

"It's not something that's passed from person to person," said Richardson.

Consumers are advised to maintain rigorous cleaning habits for all fresh food items during the ongoing health crisis.

"With produce, pay extra attention at this time with this outbreak going on — we want them to thoroughly wash your produce," said Richardson.

Antibiotics remain available to treat the illness, and MDHHS recommends anyone experiencing sudden or ongoing diarrhea to contact their healthcare provider and local health department, alongside practicing frequent handwashing.
