An impact evaluation report released on July 8, 2026, by the Thorbecke Academy revealed that King's Day significantly boosted national recognition for Dokkum, with 95 percent of local respondents declaring the event a success.

The financial report sent by the Noardeast-Fryslân college to the municipal council showed the celebration cost 2,996,248 euros, remaining just within its 3 million euro budget funded equally by the municipality and the province of Fryslân.

Recognition and Spending

According to the research, Dokkum's name recognition outside of Fryslân soared from 48 percent before the event to 85 percent afterward, based on surveys conducted among residents in Zwolle.

The organization successfully achieved its goal of regional spending, as 82 percent of the 85 hired suppliers came from northern Netherlands, with nearly half located within Dokkum itself, representing 47 percent of total expenditures.

However, the report noted that business owners outside the city center felt less involved, having to learn about the event through customers or media, while local hoteliers complained they booked out rooms at low spring rates because they were not notified early.

Additionally, while Dokkum residents rarely questioned the high price tag, residents in surrounding villages expressed concerns, noting that the 3 million euros could have been allocated differently by the municipality.

The programming formed the largest expense at over 1.9 million euros, which included 138,371 euros for canal pontoons and a real ice-skating rink, while safety, crowd management, and parking required an investment of 796,233 euros.
