The parasite outbreak in the midwestern US state has seen cases surge to 1,251. That reflects a single-day increase of nearly 260 infections.

Michigan health officials noted that the current volume of illness is highly unusual compared to their typical baseline of 50 cases per year.

The source of the outbreak remains unknown.

Cyclospora Rare in Canada

According to Public Health Agency of Canada spokesperson Mark Johnson, the parasite is absent from Canada's drinking water.

It is also rarely found on domestic food.

However, the agency noted that cyclospora can enter the country via imported produce from regions such as Peru, Cuba, India, and Mexico.

Warm weather months usually bring a rise in infections due to spring and summer produce imports.

Linked food items include pre-packaged salad mixes, basil, cilantro, raspberries, and blackberries.

To mitigate infection risks, health officials recommend cooking fruits and vegetables imported from affected areas or consuming Canadian-grown produce.
