Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch has rejected former Tory members and defeated MPs as parliamentary candidates due to their continued support for net zero targets and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

The policy shift was disclosed in an article written for The Telegraph on July 9, 2026, as the opposition party vets more than 2,000 applicants over the summer to prepare for future elections.

The political shake-up coincides with an impending leadership change in Downing Street.

Labour MP Andy Burnham secured 322 nominations to replace Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister on July 20.

According to recent polling data from YouGov, the Conservative Party and the Labour Party are currently tied at approximately 20 percent of the vote.

Both organizations trail Reform UK by an estimated four percentage points.

Strict Ideological Alignment

Badenoch established firm guidelines regarding the ideological alignment of future candidates. Those who support previous environmental mandates will be barred from returning.

"If someone still believes in net zero targets that make energy more expensive and are destroying industry, they are not coming back," said Badenoch.

She further noted that the party requires individuals fully committed to leaving the ECHR to secure national borders.

"If someone thinks that the ECHR can be wished away rather than being dealt with properly, they are not serious," she added.

The opposition leader emphasized that the party must abandon centrist policies to reclaim its political identity.
