Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has raised serious concerns about the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, alleging that renovations were conducted hastily and in violation of federal contracting laws.
In a letter sent to the center, Whitehouse detailed allegations regarding preparations for events hosted by Donald Trump in December.

“I have received allegations that the Kennedy Center has conducted rushed renovation and maintenance work with disregard to its commitments to Congress and the federal contracting standards,” Whitehouse wrote in the letter dated Thursday.
The senator said the allegations are based on disclosures from whistleblowers connected to the Government Accountability Project.
According to Whitehouse, the whistleblower accounts include details about a poorly executed revamp of the Reflecting Pool, which is reportedly already showing signs of decay.
“A cosmetic and rushed revamp of the Center’s Reflecting Pool is already rusting and peeling, and will need to be fully rebuilt,” he wrote.

Questionable Contracting Practices
Whitehouse also pointed out that an $8 million flooring contract was awarded to a company lacking relevant experience, raising further questions about the center’s contracting practices.
“Instead of pursuing renovations tailored to the building’s actual needs, the Center rushed a series of renovations driven by the President’s aesthetic whims and his desire to star in a series of televised events in December,” he stated.
In response, a Kennedy Center spokesperson asserted that the institution operates with rigorous financial oversight and that the claims regarding bypassed contracting standards are inaccurate.
