The shooting has revived trauma from past police violence, such as the death of Joe Campos Torres. Aranda described the killings as senseless and damaging to the community.
Residents have long internalized caution regarding law enforcement. Aranda recalled that barrios were intensely patrolled, and there was little faith that officers would follow rules.
Historian Adela Cedillo noted that these stories are marked by segregation, racial profiling, and police harassment. Community activists are advocating for accountability and transparency.
“We just want to be treated like humans, with due process and within the framework of the rule of law,” Cedillo said.
An anonymous neighbor expressed that the tragedy is felt on an indescribable level.
