Irvin stated that hundreds of students received identical email notifications regarding unpaid account balances.
“I was supposed to be a freshman in the incoming class, but unfortunately, yesterday I received an email informing me and about 500 other students we'd been unenrolled because of unpaid balances,” said Irvin.
Another affected student, MarLae’ Coffield, noted that her financial aid package exceeded total university charges, leaving her account with a negative balance.
“I’ve graduated early.
I graduated my junior year and I had a 4.0, and I did all of that just to get into Howard University.
And now I can't go to Howard University,” said Coffield.
Coffield explained that her family relied on community fundraising efforts to cover the required deposits before the university deadlines.
“All of my deposits, I had to make GoFundMes to raise that money because my family is low income, so we just had to come up with the money out of nowhere by these certain dates, which we've done,” said Coffield.
In official communications, Howard University stated that confirming enrollment is critical for managing academic programs, financial aid distribution, and campus housing operations.
“We understand that the enrollment update that was issued yesterday is difficult and disappointing for students and their families,” said Howard University in an official statement.
The university maintained that extensive outreach efforts took place across multiple months leading up to the decision.
“Howard University provided multiple detailed communications throughout March, April, May, June, and July to first-time-in-college students and families on steps needed to secure enrollment for the fall 2026 semester,” said Howard University.
The administration confirmed the total number of students affected by the financial review.
“The University sent notifications to 502 first-time-in-college students whose accounts did not reflect the required enrollment and financial obligations by the previously communicated deadlines,” said Howard University.
Students on campus voiced concern over administrative processes, with one student noting, “The question is what the administration is going to do about it.
This school can't run without students.”

Howard University stated that its Office of Enrollment Management, Office of Financial Aid, and Office of the Bursar are currently evaluating cases involving anticipated outside scholarships and financial resources.
