Water levels at Lake Mead and Lake Powell have plummeted to their lowest combined levels on record, worsening a severe water crisis across seven US states that depend on the Colorado River basin.
The drastic retreat of Lake Mead's shoreline has turned the receding waters into an unexpected recovery zone for historical and forensic discoveries since 2022.

Human Remains and Artifacts Emerge
On May 1, 2022, receding waters near Hemenway Harbor exposed a rusted metal barrel containing human remains with a gunshot wound.
Las Vegas police estimated the homicide occurred between the late 1970s and early 1980s.
In the following months, authorities recovered at least six sets of human remains around the reservoir.

Forensic investigators identified some victims through modern DNA testing, including Thomas Erndt, who disappeared while swimming in 2002.
Other cases remain under active investigation.
Beyond forensic discoveries, the drying lakebed has revealed numerous long-submerged relics, such as sunken recreational boats, docks, cars, and a World War II-era Higgins landing craft used during military training operations.

The severe drop in water levels results from a 20-year megadrought, rising regional temperatures, diminished Rocky Mountain snowpacks, and increasing water demand across Nevada, Arizona, California, and parts of Mexico.
