"I know that's hard for a lot forecasters. They don't want to have false alarms," Sills said.
He emphasized that rapid decision-making remains critical during severe weather tracking. "But if you want to get lead time with these things, you have to make quick decisions.

Greg Johnson, a Regina-based storm chaser, expressed skepticism regarding the growing volume and geographic spread of mobile alerts.
"I've seen storms that have no chance of producing a tornado.
And I'm getting a thing on my phone and I'm literally standing looking at the thing and going, there is no way that this should be tornado-warned," Johnson said.
Johnson warned that broad alert radii could desensitize residents who receive notices for distant or low-risk storms.
"If you're getting warnings every day and you're not seeing any tornadoes, next time the warning comes, you go, 'Damn, well, I'm not gonna change what I'm doing just because of this dumb warning, because I get these every day,'" he said.
Environment and Climate Change Canada explained that predicting twisters remains inherently difficult because only 20 percent of severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes.
Forecasters rely on Doppler radar and computer models to analyze storm structures and wind patterns rather than detecting rotation directly.
Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, acknowledged that current technology can prompt wider alert zones than the immediate danger area.

"So maybe there’s a bit of an overwarning going on now, but 20, 30, 40 years ago, we weren’t even able to do that at all, and so the risk was that no one really got the warning," Kimbell said.
