Policy experts pointed to economic market structures that prioritize raw material extraction over sustainable recycling practices.
"As long as new raw materials from destructive mining are cheaper than recycling, many manufacturers will continue to take the easier path," said Michael Reckordt, Policy Advisor for German and European Resource Policy at PowerShift.
"The better solutions have long been available. What is missing are political rules that finally make recycling and resource-saving technologies the standard."

Projections show that cutting carbon emissions from fossil fuels in half would shift the overshoot date back by three months, while reducing automobile traffic by 50 percent would delay it by 13 days.
