"There's a lot of people that are taking a cut from what the customer pays in the supermarket before any of it gets back to the farmer," he said.
Despite difficulties, Brankley remains committed to farming, saying, "I wouldn't do anything else because I enjoy it so much."
A government spokesperson from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) emphasized support through record investments.
"We are backing our hard-working farmers, investing a record £11.8bn – more than any previous government," the spokesperson said, also noting steps to reduce fuel taxes and consider suspending fertilizer tariffs.
BBC Local Radio’s Farmwatch initiative on July 30 showcased farmers' dedication and the realities of food production.
Chris Burns, head of local audio commissioning at BBC Local, described Farmwatch as a celebration of resilience and innovation.
"It is a chance to recognise the people whose work often goes unnoticed, but whose contribution is essential to all of us," he said.
