Hyundai’s next-generation Tucson prototype ended its test run dramatically in the Austrian Alps after its front brakes overheated, caught fire, and destroyed both front tires.
Engineers were hauling a trailer up and down a mountain to evaluate the braking performance of the 2027 or 2028 model year SUV when the brakes gave out.
Thick smoke poured from one front corner before the overheated brake ignited, according to a spy photographer on site.
Support vehicles reportedly emptied fire extinguishers onto the burning brake, but the heat had already transferred to the wheels, causing both front tires to burst.
The incident left the prototype stranded, but it also provided a clear look at the redesigned Tucson’s new styling.
Boxy Design and Big Screen
The 2027 Tucson swaps its current busy, sporty look for a tougher, boxier appearance inspired by the larger Santa Fe.
Inside, a massive tablet-style infotainment display dominates the dashboard, similar to setups in the Grandeur sedan and Ioniq 3.
Despite the large screen, Hyundai has confirmed it will retain physical controls, with two knobs and a row of switches visible below the display.
Powertrain details remain undisclosed, but revised gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options are expected, all with four cylinders or fewer and front- or all-wheel drive.
Rumors of a Tucson N performance variant persist, though Hyundai has not confirmed any plans.
