Liverpool Football Club has decided not to sell attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz to Chelsea during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to club sources on May 30, 2026.

The decision comes despite strong interest from incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who officially starts at Stamford Bridge on July 1.

The Germany international joined Liverpool in the summer of 2025 after Fenway Sports Group spent £116 million to sign him from Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz initially found it difficult to adjust to English football but completed his debut season with seven goals and 10 assists across 49 matches for the Reds.

Media outlets had reported that Alonso wanted Chelsea to secure Wirtz to strengthen a midfield potentially losing Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid.

Reports from Football Insider suggested Liverpool might consider a transfer, but internal stance at Anfield remains firm against a sale.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey provided clarity on the position of the Liverpool hierarchy regarding the future of the 23-year-old playmaker.

"Liverpool are not going to move on from Florian Wirtz, they worked so hard on that and the word from inside Anfield is the way he finished the season was a real plus point," said Graeme Bailey, transfer insider.

The club leadership acknowledged the initial adaptation struggles faced by the midfielder amid a broader squad transition.

"They know he struggled to adapt at first, but they had so many new players coming in – it was never going to be easy," Bailey said.

Speculation tied Wirtz to former suitors and his previous manager, but Anfield officials maintain that no external contact has been established.

"But even if someone, like a Bayern Munich – who wanted him before, or if Xabi Alonso – who pushed for him at Chelsea, there is no way that Liverpool are letting him go, and they insist they have not heard anything from anyone," Bailey said.

The internal consensus points toward a long-term future for the German international on Merseyside.

"Wirtz is at Liverpool to STAY," Bailey concluded.

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey also offered his perspective on the development of the young midfielder within the team.

"Could Florian Wirtz go on to break the record for assists in a single season? You would like to think so," said Emile Heskey, former Liverpool player.

Heskey noted that the significant financial investment reflects the high expectations placed on the player.

"That's why they spent all that money on him," Heskey said.

The former forward expressed optimism about a turnaround while suggesting tactical adjustments to maximize the playmaker's impact.

"I'd like to think he'll come good. He's just found it very difficult so far.

I think Liverpool need to look at a change in their style of play to bring back a sense of energy and high intensity to get running at teams again," Heskey said.

Heskey drew stylistic parallels between the German midfielder and a former Anfield fan favorite.

"Wirtz is a very intricate player, and he reminds me of Philippe Coutinho at times," Heskey said.

He noted that tactical positioning remains a strong point for Wirtz despite current physical limitations.

"He picks up those little pockets of space like Coutinho used to," Heskey said.

Heskey emphasized that developing chemistry with teammates will be critical for the midfielder in his second season.

"He just doesn't seem to have that real power or energy at the minute to drive them on, but he picks up some sensational positions, gets the ball and turns," Heskey said.

The former striker urged patience from the fanbase ahead of the upcoming campaign under manager Arne Slot.

"It's the next little bit, and more understanding with the players around him, that he needs. Let's give him next season and see how he goes," Heskey said.

A revamped squad dynamic could provide the necessary environment for the player to reach his full potential.

"Hopefully, we'll see the best of him with a new team around him as well," Heskey added.
