Authorities in Russian-annexed Crimea declared an emergency on Friday following intensified Ukrainian aerial attacks that knocked out the main power substation in Sevastopol and disrupted key military logistics networks.
The strikes triggered widespread fuel shortages, rolling blackouts, and severe transport restrictions. Officials suspended petrol sales to private motorists and limited public utility hours amid 30-degree Celsius temperatures.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported shooting down 660 Ukrainian drones overnight, marking one of the largest aerial barrages since the conflict began four and a half years ago.
Strategic Goals
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked the escalating long-range campaign directly to Kyiv's strategic goals for the region.
"We are doing everything to force Russia to end the war and restore justice.
And it is Crimea that is at the centre of this policy of ensuring justice," said Zelenskyy.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the operations are systematically dismantling Moscow's ability to use the annexed territory as a secure military staging ground.
"Today, Ukraine is depriving Russia of this launchpad and drawing a line under its attempts to normalise war," said Zelenskyy.
In response to the blackouts, Russia-installed Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhayev urged residents to conserve electricity and brace for extended outages while emergency crews assessed the infrastructure damage.
"We will not be intimidated by the lack of light. We have gone through more than that, and we will survive now," said Razvozhayev.
The governor claimed the strikes were deliberately aimed at disrupting civilian infrastructure and creating unrest across the port city.
"The enemy is again striking vilely, trying to deprive us of our usual living conditions and sow panic," said Razvozhayev.
From the Ukrainian military perspective, Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Robert Brovdi confirmed that the operations successfully neutralized dozens of strategic assets.
A UK Defence Intelligence analysis on June 27 revealed that previous strikes on June 19-20 had disabled three vehicle ferries in the Kerch Strait, expanding options to strike the Crimean Bridge.
"Ukraine has been carrying out strikes on Russian military logistics networks in occupied Ukraine with increasing intensity, enabled by the availability of different effectors, including one-way attack drones and stand-off munitions.
The breadth of Ukrainian targeting is also degrading Russian air defences even in well-established priority locations like the Kerch Strait," stated the UK Defence Intelligence update.
