Greater Manchester Police have launched investigations into two separate stabbing incidents in Manchester city center, triggering major emergency responses and the implementation of a dispersal order.
The violent events occurred in high-traffic nightlife areas: the Northern Quarter and Piccadilly Gardens.
Northern Quarter Incident
An overnight police cordon blocked the junction of Oldham Street and Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter around 3:00 a.
m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Witnesses reported to the Manchester Evening News that a group with covered faces assaulted an individual before fleeing the scene, leaving a man stabbed.
Official confirmation from authorities remains pending.
Piccadilly Gardens Assault
In a separate earlier incident on Thursday, June 18, 2026, emergency services were deployed to Piccadilly Gardens at approximately 7:20 p.
m. following reports of a large disturbance.
Officers discovered a man in his 20s suffering from injuries consistent with a knife attack. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police detained a 22-year-old man on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and a 24-year-old woman on suspicion of affray.
A strict dispersal order covering major surrounding roads, including Princess Street and Great Ancoats Street, was enforced until Friday morning.
Metrolink tram services experienced minor delays.
Witness Account
Local resident Tony Farrell, 55, witnessed the aftermath in Piccadilly Gardens while walking through the area.
He described hearing "sirens coming from all directions."
Farrell observed emergency response teams providing immediate first aid to the victim on the ground.
"I saw a man on the floor.
I didn't think much of it at first but then I saw police officers around him, tending to him and giving him first aid.
He looked like he was holding his back," Farrell said.
"Paramedics attended as well and police taped off a big section of the Gardens, near the tram stop.
There were detectives there as well."
The frequency of violent incidents in the central plaza caused deep concern for the bystander.
"It was just shocking," Farrell said.
The resident expressed a sense of inevitability regarding ongoing security challenges in the neighborhood.
"But it's no surprise. It looks like there's no end to it," he added.
