Crystal Palace centre‑back Chris Richards has torn two ligaments in his ankle during a league match, raising concerns over his availability for the 2026 World Cup.

The injury occurred in the weekend fixture against Brentford, where the 26‑year‑old was substituted in the 61st minute after feeling discomfort.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the seriousness of the setback on Thursday, noting that Richards will miss the upcoming Arsenal game and that his chances of playing in the Conference League final are now 50/50.

Glasner said the ankle is stable but heavily swollen, and the medical team is working around the clock to reduce the swelling before Richards can resume training.

"He is in from sunrise until sunset having treatments and everything we can do that reduces the swelling," Glasner added.

Implications for the USMNT

The injury poses a major challenge for United States coach Mauricio Pochettino, who must finalize a 26‑man squad by May 26.

Richards has become a key figure in the US defence, earning 13 caps since the start of 2025 and winning the men's player of the year award in January.

Pochettino’s options at centre‑back are limited; only four players have logged at least 500 minutes under his tenure.

Regular starters Tim Ream, Miles Robinson and Mark McKenzie remain fit, while Auston Trusty featured 89 minutes against Portugal in March.

The United States also await a decision from 19‑year‑old Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks, who is eligible for both the US and Germany.
