United States men's national team defender Chris Richards sustained two torn ligaments in his left ankle during a Crystal Palace match on May 17, 2026, severely jeopardizing his availability for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed the diagnosis during a press conference on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The 26-year-old center back suffered the injury after coming on as a substitute against Brentford and limped off the pitch after the final whistle.

The injury forces Richards to miss the final Premier League match against Arsenal this Sunday.

Furthermore, Glasner listed the defender as a 50-50 doubt for the upcoming UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig, Germany, on Wednesday.

"I think it's stable, but quite swollen, and we have to deal with the swelling," said Glasner.

The manager noted that the club medical staff is working intensely to accelerate the recovery process ahead of the European final, which will be Glasner's final game before departing the club this summer.

"He is in from sunrise until sunset having treatments and everything we can do that reduces the swelling, and of course we have a great medical department, so we will give our best and he will give his best — and then let's see if we can get it done," added Glasner.

World Cup Implications

According to reports from the New York Times and Yahoo Sports, Richards has been a vital starter for USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino, appearing in 13 of his 24 matches in charge.

The USMNT is scheduled to open its World Cup Group D campaign against Paraguay on June 12, 2026, in Inglewood, California.

The defensive setback follows recent injury absences for other American center backs, including Tim Ream of Charlotte FC and Miles Robinson of FC Cincinnati, who are both still working back to full speed.

Other healthy options remaining for the American roster include Mark McKenzie, Auston Trusty, Tristan Blackmon, and Alex Freeman.
