Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton delivered a lighthearted critique of 1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve during a press conference ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend in Montreal.

Hamilton reflected on the legacy of Jacques's late father, Gilles Villeneuve, after whom the Montreal circuit is named.

He acknowledged his limited initial knowledge about the six-time Ferrari race winner compared to other legends like Niki Lauda.

"Yes, as much as I can say about it, I personally didn't really know a lot about him, to be honest.

I obviously knew about Niki [Lauda], more so because I got to spend a lot of time with him," explained Hamilton.

The seven-time world champion noted that his research into historical drivers showed Gilles Villeneuve was an exceptional competitor who excelled at balancing his moving car on the limit.

"So, whilst reading up on some of the great drivers that have been here, all I really knew is that he was a great driver.

He seemed to be, from some of the videos, a driver that really was at the edge of his seat," said Hamilton.

Following his praise for the late Ferrari icon, Hamilton playfully targeted the racing legacy of Gilles's son, Jacques Villeneuve.

"And obviously far better than his son," added Hamilton with a laugh.

Jacques Villeneuve has previously voiced public criticism regarding Hamilton's performance. Ahead of the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, he commented on Hamilton's initial transition difficulties after joining Ferrari.

"They're not getting what they signed," said Jacques Villeneuve while speaking to Sky Sports F1.

He further elaborated on the mutual dissatisfaction he observed between Hamilton and the Italian team during that period.

The Villeneuve family legacy continues to influence Formula 1 culture.

Gilles Villeneuve achieved legendary status with Ferrari before passing away in 1982, prompting his family to launch an official lifestyle and apparel brand in his honor in 2025.
