"Changing audience behaviours mean fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways," the statement added.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer expressed confidence that the flagship highlights show remains secure despite wider programming cuts.

"I think Match of the Day will be there for a long, long time," Shearer said.

Shearer reflected on his personal history with Football Focus, calling the cancellation sad but understandable.

"It was pretty sad because I grew up watching Football Focus but I guess it's just the world we live in now," he said.

Both Shearer and Scott are scheduled to remain core parts of the BBC's broadcast coverage team for the 2026 World Cup.

New broadcast talent, including former Premier League players Olivier Giroud and Lucas Leiva, will join the lineup.
