Manchester United is restructuring its midfield under new permanent manager Michael Carrick by pursuing two key targets: Atalanta's Ederson and Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali.

Italian sports journalist Niccolo Ceccarini of Tuttomercatoweb reported that a transfer for Ederson is nearly complete, as the Brazilian midfielder has prioritized a move to Old Trafford despite interest from another club.

United previously submitted a verbal offer valued at €45 million, meeting Atalanta's valuation range of €45 million to €50 million.

The 26-year-old is expected to add technical quality to a midfield that could lose Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte.

Meanwhile, reports conflict regarding United's pursuit of Tonali, whom Carrick prefers over Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson. While Tuttomercatoweb indicated a near agreement, other sources highlight significant financial obstacles.

Football reporter Fabrizio Romano detailed the situation on his YouTube channel: "Manchester United have been on a mission in the recent days in Italy to discuss about several topics."

Romano noted that United appreciates Tonali, who has adapted to a deeper defensive role in England while maintaining his box-to-box capabilities.

However, the club believes the midfielder is currently too expensive.

"Manchester United believe Tonali at the moment is really expensive, so at the moment the price remains the problem," said Romano.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United will demand a transfer fee of no less than €115 million (£100 million) to let the player depart.
