England manager Thomas Tuchel has dismissed the notion that his side enters the 2026 World Cup as heavy favorites, urging a measured and collective approach to the tournament.
Speaking in Miami on June 9, 2026, ahead of England's final warm-up match against Costa Rica, Tuchel emphasized that the team's recent near-misses do not automatically elevate them to favorite status.

"We can't be one of the favourites as we haven't won it for so long," said Tuchel, referencing England's last major trophy in 1966 and their runner-up finishes at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
Step-by-Step Mentality
Tuchel stressed the importance of focusing on each stage of the competition rather than looking too far ahead.
"If we want to reach the top of the mountain we go step-by-step otherwise we will get distracted," he said.
The German coach noted that England's recent tournament experience—semi-finals and finals—shows they are close, but fine margins and luck will determine success.
"Once you reach a quarter-final you can win any competition and go all the way," Tuchel added.
Squad Depth and Fitness Updates
Tuchel provided updates on key players, confirming that Bukayo Saka is being carefully managed after an Achilles injury in March.
"We still have to take a little bit of care for Bukayo," said Tuchel, adding that the Arsenal winger is being gradually built up.
