"We're not full yet but the anticipation is that we will fill up," Swan said.

He noted that occupancy is heavily concentrated around the specific days when matches are actively being played.

"The night before and the game nights is where we are seeing our highest occupancy," Swan said.

The downtown property is seeing very few bookings from typical summer events, concerts, or standard conventions, which appear to have been deterred by the tournament footprint.

"Summer is typically very busy and we've seen some stronger (summers)," Swan said.

He expressed hope that late-paying visitors would help close the remaining occupancy gap.

"Now we're just hoping to book as many as we can," Swan said.

Makenzie Wolters, a spokesperson for Visit KC, confirmed that FIFA exercised a specific contract clause to drop the rooms penalty-free, putting local hospitality operators in a difficult operational position.

"We recognize that it has put many of our hotel partners in a difficult position, but we are optimistic as we start to see more positive travel data for Kansas City," Wolters said.

Bethany Marcum, a corporate conference attendee staying in downtown Kansas City, stated that her January booking reflected the inflated rates hotels charged before the blocks were dissolved.

"It was more expensive than I thought," Marcum said.

She noted that consumer pricing seemed tied to the early projection of packed local hotels.

"What we were being quoted and paid was probably contingent on the fact that they expected those bookings.
