Austria took a narrow first-half lead against debutants Jordan in their opening 2026 World Cup Group J match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Romano Schmid opened the scoring for Austria by whipping a spectacular strike into the top corner after receiving a layoff from Xaver Schlager, leaving Jordanian goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila stationary.

Jordan, making their first-ever World Cup appearance after nine failed qualifying attempts, responded aggressively with Ali Olwan hitting the crossbar with a header and Odeh Fakhouri forcing a crucial save from Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

Austrian manager Ralf Rangnick introduced veteran forward Marko Arnautović for his 130th international appearance at the start of the second half to maintain control over the Group J fixture.

Before the tournament, Jordan adjusted their long-term strategy following unsuccessful managerial stints by English coaches Ray Wilkins and Harry Redknapp, eventually securing qualification under Moroccan coaches Hussein Ammouta and Jamal Sellami.

"In my childhood, I was brought up with the fact that Jordan is a home of football talent," said Mustafa Arqawi, former communications director for the Jordan Football Association.

Arqawi noted that the team's historical progression relied on systematic restructuring rather than relying solely on high-profile managerial names to reach the global tournament.

"Like almost every Jordanian citizen, I grew up with an unequivocal passion and a dream for our national team to compete at the top level," said Arqawi.
