Chicago had trouble defensively in the series opener, particularly when rookie first baseman Jacob Gonzalez misplayed a grounder by Anthony Volpe during a four-run third inning for New York.
Gonzalez, a natural shortstop filling in for the injured Munetaka Murakami, misread the play and moved out of position to back up the throw home.
"I thought it was going to get through, so I went to cut off [the throw] home," said Gonzalez.
"I should've went to the base first, then the cut off. I feel really bad.
