The Celtics' core aged and suffered injuries—McHale's foot, Bird's back, Walton's retirement—and the team did not win another championship until 2008.

"The impact without him there and without another solidifier or bona fide pick in that draft or anybody else to come in and succeed Bird, McHale, and Parish or Walton, was nonexistent," Twiss said.

"I remember the consensus in our office is his death probably sent us back 10 years," he added.

League-Wide Reforms

The 1986 draft class also struggled.

Players like Chris Washburn, William Bedford, and Roy Tarpley faced substance abuse issues, labeling it a disappointing cohort.

"That draft class had a wealth of potential," Twiss noted.

The NBA responded by strengthening drug prevention education. The tragedy highlighted the league's drug problems and spurred policy changes.
