The Los Angeles Lakers have begun preliminary contract discussions with LeBron James' representatives, but the four-time MVP has not yet committed to returning for the 2026-27 season, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

Speaking on SportsCenter, Shelburne revealed that the conversations have been described as "keeping in touch," with no firm commitment from James and no salary figures discussed.

"He is still assessing his options, whether that is retirement or other teams," Shelburne said.

The 41-year-old forward earned $52.6 million in the 2025-26 season, playing alongside Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.

However, internal dynamics may complicate any potential pay cut.

Sacrifices and Pay Cut Concerns

James has reportedly felt underappreciated for sacrifices made while playing as the "third option" behind Reaves and Doncic, per a report by ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

This sentiment could affect his willingness to accept a reduced salary.

Even a maximum offer from the Lakers—three years and $182 million—is considered unlikely by league insiders.

"Nobody around the league expects the team to offer James anywhere close to that," McMenamin said.

If James returns to Los Angeles on a smaller deal, the drop from his current salary could be as much as $22 million, even if the total exceeds what other teams can offer.

Shelburne noted that the Lakers must present a figure that feels respectful to James, or risk losing him to competitors like the Golden State Warriors, who have limited financial flexibility but remain potential suitors.

The Lakers hold exclusive negotiating rights until free agency officially opens on June 30.

General manager Rob Pelinka must balance James' contract situation with roster upgrades demanded by star players and the upcoming free agency decision for Austin Reaves.
