Extremely critical fire weather conditions disrupted suppression efforts at the massive Cottonwood Fire in southern Utah on Saturday, June 27, 2026, as emergency crews faced volatile wind gusts and historically low moisture levels.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City previously issued a rare "particularly dangerous situation" red flag warning for parts of Utah due to a combination of high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity.

According to officials, the uncontained blaze has already grown larger than the total area of Salt Lake City.

Incident commanders were forced to halt ground and air operations temporarily due to the dangerous environment, according to fire officials.

"Our biggest challenge right now is that we have single digit humidities and the wind gusts are around 45 miles per hour," said Alyssa Mason, spokesperson assigned to the fire.

The dry atmosphere has exacerbated fuel susceptibility across the region, making vegetation highly combustible.

"That's on top of fuel moistures between 2 and 8 percent," said Alyssa Mason.

The severe conditions escalated on Friday afternoon, creating an immediate safety hazard for personnel deployed near the flames.

The high winds forced incident managers to temporarily "pull guys off the line," Mason added.

The Intermountain West is experiencing widespread drought following an abnormally dry winter that yielded record-low snowpack levels.

The critical shortage of resources and ongoing fire threats prompted Utah Gov. Spencer Cox to implement an emergency order restricting fireworks through the Independence Day holiday.
