The South Korean government announced on Monday a massive economic initiative to build a semiconductor complex in the country's southwestern region, backed by an 800 trillion won ($585 billion) investment from the government and local chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.

According to the government announcement reported by the Korea Times, the initiative forms a key pillar of three flagship megaprojects designed to accelerate an artificial intelligence-driven industrial transformation.

The overall framework focuses heavily on domestic infrastructure by targeting advancements in semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced data storage infrastructure.

AI Data Centers and Power Capacity

As part of the technological expansion, the government unveiled separate plans to establish specialized AI data centers within the southwestern region.

This data center initiative is supported by an additional 550 trillion won investment from SK Group, GS Group, and Naver.

The power capacity for the upcoming data centers will initially provide 8.4 gigawatts.

The government specified a long-term goal to scale this energy infrastructure up to 18.4 gigawatts by the year 2035.

Government officials stated that the high-tech investments are being strategically distributed across the southwestern, central, and southeastern territories.

This geographical allocation functions as part of a broader, state-led push aimed at promoting balanced regional development across the nation.
