Younger individuals in their late teens or early 20s are highly susceptible because they lack prior exposure to many influenza variants through previous infection or vaccination.

Lackland operates as the sole basic training site for the Air Force, drawing trainees from across the United States and global locations.

Although influenza circulates continuously throughout the year, summer cases remain uncommon in the United States, but a single introduced case can trigger a significant outbreak.

Sanchez compared the crowded military environment to a petri dish, noting that leaders are acting with maximum speed to immunize unvaccinated individuals before July.

Approximately 700 new recruits arrive at Lackland every week, while recorded influenza cases continue to rise sharply.

Once the existing vaccine supply expires, military officials plan to pivot toward alternative infection control methods to limit disease transmission.

These backup measures include dividing recruits into smaller cohorts for meals and hygiene, increasing handwashing protocols, and utilizing hand sanitizer frequently.

Face masks and respirators remain an option, though they present training difficulties and cannot be worn while recruits sleep or shower.

Sanchez expressed disappointment regarding the initial decision to overturn the vaccine mandate, which originally began in 1945.

"Here we are, 81 years later, and we're turning back the clock," Sanchez said.

He suggested utilizing messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to quickly update influenza vaccines during unusual outbreaks.

Moderna is prepared to launch the first mRNA influenza vaccine for individuals aged 50 and older, but the platform could eventually expand to younger, high-risk cohorts like military recruits.

Sanchez noted that an mRNA manufacturing base would allow officials to secure updated influenza vaccines within one to two months rather than the traditional five to six months.
