According to studio estimates reported by The Associated Press, the film has accumulated $585 million globally within two weeks.

It is now one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Supergirl Underwhelms in Debut

Warner Bros.' new superhero release "Supergirl" underperformed in its theatrical debut, generating $38 million across U.

S. and Canadian theaters.

The DC Studios production added $30 million from overseas territories, bringing its global debut total to $68 million.

The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by James Gunn, faced critical and audience resistance.

It earned a 56% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B-" CinemaScore.

The opening figures placed "Supergirl" behind previous DC releases such as "The Flash" ($55 million in 2023) and "The Green Lantern" ($53 million in 2011).

The performance reflects a broader downward trend for the genre.

Data from movie consulting firm FranchiseRe indicates that annual superhero box office revenues have decreased by approximately $3.5 billion compared to the pre-pandemic peak years of 2017–2019.

"You'll hear general explanations like 'the audience lost interest.' Yes, they did," said David A.

Gross, head of FranchiseRe.

Gross noted that female-led superhero films have experienced a sharp decline following earlier successes like "Wonder Woman" and "Captain Marvel."
