Prior to the official signing, NHL Insider Rick Dhaliwal speculated that the Maple Leafs might circle back with Stecher to fill the vacant defensive spot.
Newly appointed General Manager John Chayka is shaping the team's defensive approach heading into free agency. "Good fit for Brandon in St. Louis, a fresh start," Chayka said.
He also emphasized the organizational shift: "Good fit for us to get some new blood on the back end.
We've talked about changing the way we defend and break out pucks."
Stecher has accumulated 25 goals and 106 assists for 131 points across 624 career regular-season NHL games.
