"He went down, and then, at that point, he stayed down.
So I was over top of him, but the water was so murky, and you couldn't even see a foot down," Bury added.
Jamie Yetter, Bury's fiancée who also ran to the water to assist, described the physical appearance and actions of the reptile during the encounter.
"We thought we saw a guy stuck in a rip current, so Chris took off down to the water, and I ran right after him," Yetter told NBC Los Angeles.

Yetter noted that the crocodile was exceptionally large and had secured the victim by his upper leg.
"The crocodile had him by the thigh, and he would turn, and the size of this crocodile, I mean, his head was as long as my torso, his tail thicker than my legs.
He was just turning him, taking him under," Yetter said.
Yetter expressed profound emotional distress regarding the outcome of the incident and noted that her family had misidentified the crocodile silhouette on the hotel safety signage.
"I am so consumed with grief and anger," Yetter said.
