Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Ottawa-Gatineau and eastern Ontario on Tuesday evening, June 30, 2026, as cleanup efforts began following a destructive tornado warning in nearby Kingston.

The weather agency warned that the system could bring wind gusts reaching 110 km/h, ping-pong ball-sized hail, and over 50 millimeters of rain on Tuesday night.

This yellow alert represents the lowest level on its scale.

Kingston Cleanup Underway

Municipal crews in Kingston responded to widespread flooding and uprooted trees after a red tornado warning was lifted at 1:30 p.

m. ET.

The flash storm forced a brief suspension of local transit operations.

Emergency services in South Frontenac also experienced a surge in distress calls as fallen trees blocked major roadways during the peak of the storm.

South Frontenac Fire Chief Del Blakney described the sudden onset of the severe weather system. "It seemed like it was nighttime," said Blakney.

Blakney noted that the sky went dark immediately before the intense wind and rain struck the community.

"I went to the window to look and all I saw were the trees swirling in the wind and rain," he added.
