The United States Supreme Court blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to abolish birthright citizenship via executive order on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, delivering a blow to his administration's strict immigration policies.
Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the 5-to-4 majority opinion, emphasizing the historical weight of the country's citizenship laws.

Noi oggi manteniamo quella promessa," said Chief Justice John Roberts.
The ruling revealed splits among the conservative justices, with Justice Amy Coney Barrett joining the liberal bloc to rule against the order, while Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined a 6-to-3 majority finding the order violated federal law.
Conservative Justice Samuel Alito strongly dissented from the majority's decision, warning about the broad implications of the ruling.
Alito further criticized the legal interpretation for expanding citizenship rights to unauthorized groups.

Following the decision, President Donald Trump expressed his frustration with the ruling on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Vice President JD Vance also addressed the ruling during an appearance on Fox News, signaling that the administration would continue its efforts.
"Abbiamo argomentazioni valide. Dobbiamo solo continuare a batterci su tale fronte," noted Vice President JD Vance.
Despite the setback, Vance maintained that the administration's broader push to reshape immigration policy would persist.
