German economist Joachim Klement acknowledged the failure of his mathematical World Cup prediction model on June 30, 2026, after the Netherlands, Germany, and Brazil disrupted his tournament forecasts within a 12-hour period.

Klement, an analyst for a British investment bank, previously predicted the 2014, 2018, and 2022 champions.

He faced social media mockery from Brazilian forward Neymar after forecasting that Japan would eliminate Brazil and that the Netherlands would win the tournament.

The mathematical model factored in gross domestic product per capita, population size, weather, FIFA rankings, and an element of chance.

Klement noted his system felt wrong in April but defended his reliance on the calculations despite the subsequent tournament upsets.

Following the Netherlands' elimination by Morocco in a penalty shootout, Klement published a statement addressing the Dutch public on his Substack blog.

He expressed optimism about the future of the Dutch squad despite the round of 16 exit.

Klement pointed out that public sentiment regarding the Dutch national team shifted significantly over the course of the group stages.

He also compared his feelings regarding the Dutch team to his observations of the German national team, which lost to Paraguay on penalties.

The analyst revealed that his email inbox became flooded with messages questioning his formulas or mockingly celebrating the incorrect forecasts.

He defended his profession by drawing parallels between sports tournaments and financial market forecasting models.

Klement confirmed he intends to maintain his predictive model for future international tournaments.

He concluded that unpredictability remains the primary appeal of athletic competitions.

The missed predictions prompted direct reactions on social media from soccer star Neymar, who highlighted the errors following Brazil's extra-time victory over Japan.
