ECONE, Switzerland — The ultratraditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) consecrated four bishops without papal approval on Wednesday, triggering automatic excommunication for all participating clergy.

The unauthorized ceremony took place at the SSPX seminary in Econe, Switzerland, directly challenging Pope Leo XIV's priority of church unity.

According to Vatican canon law, unauthorized consecrations result in immediate excommunication.

While the Holy See does not need to issue a formal decree, a public statement is anticipated due to the high-profile nature of the event.

The Vatican described the act as "schismatic."

Excommunication as Discipline

Canon law experts explain that excommunication serves as a disciplinary tool rather than a permanent ban from the church.

"What you did was wrong and you must repent for what you have done," said Rev. Robert Gahl, an expert at the Catholic University of America.

He described the penalty as "bitter tasting" but aimed at reforming the individual's actions through spiritual discipline.

The SSPX previously disciplined its own members, including the late Bishop Richard Williamson, who was expelled in 2012 for insubordination.
