New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso secured his first official signing on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, as the club finalized a £47 million deal for Atalanta defender Marco Palestra.
The 21-year-old Italian international committed to a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The London club successfully intercepted the transfer after outbidding Serie A champions Inter Milan, who previously led the pursuit with an alternative financial proposal.
The acquisition initiates an aggressive squad overhaul following Chelsea's tenth-place Premier League finish last season.
Palestra established his reputation during a loan spell at Cagliari last term, where he recorded 37 appearances.
His performances earned him the Serie A Defender of the Year accolade and the league's Speed Award for reaching a top speed of 27.96 km/h, while his 81 completed dribbles led all European defenders across the top five leagues.
"A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world," said Palestra.
The versatile defender, who transitioned into his current role from central midfield, expressed enthusiasm regarding the upcoming English top-flight campaign.

"We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi," he added.
The player noted that discussions with the management regarding tactical approaches influenced his decision.
"He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can't wait to compete in the Premier League," said Palestra.
The restructuring of the Chelsea defensive line coincides with the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
The Press Association reports that the hierarchy is preparing a bid for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, who is currently representing France at the World Cup alongside Chelsea full-back Malo Gusto.
Manchester City remains among the clubs targeting Gusto, with Chelsea valuing the former Lyon player at £75 million.
