The Chicago Blackhawks added a veteran presence to their defensive corps on July 1, 2026, signing left-handed defenseman Ian Cole to a one-year contract.
The deal guarantees a base salary of $4 million and can reach up to $4.75 million through performance incentives, according to reports.

Veteran Leadership for Young Blue Line
Cole, 37, brings extensive NHL experience to a relatively young Chicago defensive group. He has played for nine different teams over 16 seasons.
Known for his defensive stability and penalty-killing ability, Cole is expected to provide leadership on and off the ice.
The signing follows other roster moves by the Blackhawks on the same day, including an extension for Bowen Byram and the addition of Cole Smith.
Cole spent the previous season with the Utah Mammoth, playing all 82 regular-season games.
He recorded 23 points (three goals, 20 assists) while averaging 18 minutes and 16 seconds of ice time per game.

Originally selected 18th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 NHL Draft, Cole played parts of five seasons there.
His career has also included stints with Pittsburgh, Columbus, Colorado, Minnesota, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, and Utah.
Cole has significant postseason experience, winning two Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Over his NHL career, he has appeared in 990 regular-season games, totaling 233 points (38 goals, 195 assists).
