He also noted that controversies regarding donor-funded gifts for ministers negatively impacted the party, suggesting such expenditures should have emerged from campaign budgets instead.

Newly disclosed internal documents obtained by Jeremy Corbyn via a subject access request revealed that Labour Together, under McSweeney's direction from 2017 to 2020, actively monitored party membership views on antisemitism through YouGov polling while placing strategic media stories.

The documents showed that a November 2018 poll found 76% of surveyed members believed the antisemitism crisis was exaggerated or hyped, a figure that sat at 71% in July 2019.

In an email, McSweeney wrote that Corbyn's absolute support numbers remained high despite his handling of Brexit and antisemitism.

"Corbyn's absolute numbers are still very high (68%) particularly given his dreadful performance on Brexit and antisemitism," he wrote.

The internal records also highlighted that Labour Together viewed the independent media outlet The Canary as a political challenge due to its high trust rating among Corbyn supporters, subsequently targeting it with an advertising boycott via the Stop Funding Fake News campaign.

Regarding the current leadership transition, McSweeney endorsed Andy Burnham as the correct choice to succeed Starmer, noting that having top government figures living entirely outside London would benefit the administration.

"If at the top of government there are people who don't just have a desk somewhere outside London but actually live their whole lives outside of London, I think that will be a good thing," he said.

He dismissed potential logistical hurdles regarding a non-London centric leadership layout.

"A lot of people won't like it. I think it's a good idea.

I think he should just push it through, the logistics can be sorted out," McSweeney said.

He concluded by stating that he plans to remain entirely out of British politics for the next few years to pursue a different professional direction.
