A severe heat warning remains in effect across Chicago after the city shattered a nearly century-old temperature record on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, with thunderstorms expected to arrive soon.

According to FOX Chicago meteorologist Mike Caplan, the daily low temperature reached 80 degrees Fahrenheit, surpassing the previous highest minimum temperature record of 78 degrees Fahrenheit set in 1931.

The daytime high on Wednesday hit 95 degrees Fahrenheit, although a slight drop in humidity provided some relief by keeping the heat index relatively stable.

Forecasters predict heat index values will climb between 100 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday as actual daytime temperatures rise back into the mid-90s.

A brief influx of cooler air from Wisconsin thunderstorms is expected to slow the temperature rise in far-northern Illinois counties, but the cooling effect will be temporary.
